Gay artists from New York and Cuba will meet in Miami this weekend, June 13 to 16, for Out in the Tropics.
Celebrating its fourth year, Out in the Tropics is presented by FUNDarte, a multidisciplinary non-profit organization dedicated to producing, presenting, and promoting music, theater, dance, film and visual arts that speak to Miami’s diverse cultures with an emphasis on Hispanic arts and culture.
This year’s performers from New York include performance artist Taylor Mac, the Cuban-American diva of queer comedy Carmelita Tropicana, and the all-mall gay singing string quartet Well-Strung. Joining from Cuba is Havana’s daring and controversial lesbian feminist theater collective Cubalandia. There will also be a showing of the controversial new Cuban film “Verde Verde” directed by Enrique Pineda Barnet, which explores issues of gay male identity and homophobia in contemporary Cuba.
Other activities, such as free workshops, receptions, post-performance parties and other events will be happening during this weekend-long celebration of contemporary LGBT artists
“There’s no other festival like this in the United States,” says Ever Chavez, FUNDarte’s Artistic Director. “[Out inn the Tropics] is a bold collection of the world’s best contemporary lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender performances.”
