Lansing, Mich., City Council votes to end ties with St. Petersburg

Carol Wood, Lansing, Mich., City Council president, speaking yesterday as the body voted 7-0 to pass a resolution calling on the Lansing Regional Sister Cities Commission to end Lansing’s “sister city” relationship with St. Petersburg, Russia, in light of that country’s new law banning “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations.” During the build up to passage of the legislation and since its June 30 signing by President Vladimir Putin, Russia has seen a brutal uptick in violence against LGBT people.
