The Youth Pride Alliance’s ”Fall Crawl,” scheduled for 3 to 7 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 20, hitting a number of venues on 17th Street in Northwest, is in fact a ”bar crawl,” but it’s not meant to be an oxymoron.
”This is not a youth event,” says Brian McNamee, 29, scholarship director and board member at YPA. ”This is a way for people our age to have fun and benefit youth.”
According to McNamee, the all-volunteer organization’s first bar crawl has been organized to fund at least 50 percent of the two scholarships that YPA grants to selected students annually: the Wanda Alston Scholarship and the newly named Cheryl Spector Scholarship.
”The scholarships have been kind of small,” McNamee says. ”They’ve just been $500 in past years, and we’d like to grow them. Our goal is to get them to at least a $1,000 each this year.”
Participating establishments include: 17th Street Café, JR.’s, Jack’s, DIK Bar, Trio Restaurant, Fox & Hounds Lounge and Townhouse Tavern, among others.
Registration is $10 before, $15 at door of 17th Street Café. For more information about the 17th Street Fall Crawl, visit http://17thstreetcrawl.com. For information about Youth Pride Alliances scholarships, visit www.youthpridedc.org.
