This time last year, the Whitman-Walker Clinic must have been pleased as the tally showed they had exceeded their $500,000 AIDS Walk Washington fundraising goal by nearly $100,000. This year, Clinic counters must be thrilled as the tally for the Saturday, Oct. 6, walk has passed $800,000, with a few more donations yet to register.
“We couldn’t have been more pleased with this year’s AIDS Walk,” says the clinic’s Dave Mallory, director of the annual event. “The turnout, the dollars raised and even the weather exceeded our expectations. It was the most successful AIDS Walk since the late ’90s and we appreciate the generosity and support of those who participated. We’re looking forward to building on this year’s success for next year’s AIDS Walk.”
As for feet on the ground, the clinic estimates that 6,000 people walked, while about a thousand participated in the event’s new offering: a 5K run. The best recorded time in the run went to Christopher Baumler of Catonsville, Md., with 17 minutes, 36 seconds.
