Time hasn't stood still for band's guitarist, John Lilley
When it comes to hooters, one sort is definitely more gay than the other. The kind that comes with burgers, fries and bright-orange hot pants, not so gay. The kind that remind you of ”a wave on the ocean” and the ’80s/’90s, perhaps more gay than you realized.
”We’re back,” says John Lilley, the openly gay guitarist and mandolin player of the Philly-based band, ”and we’re having a great time.”

Not only are The Hooters back, but they’re playing the Birchmere Saturday, March 29, to promote the band’s first studio album since 1993, Time Stand Still. The show does not, however, mark a rare return for Lilley. He’s around D.C. plenty. He and his partner Bob Lohrman, associate director of Shear Madness at the Kennedy Center, and with whom he’ll be celebrating 29 years in August, keep an apartment in the District.
”I love Eastern Market, Dupont, the museums,” he says with civic pride. ”My current favorite restaurant is Firefly.”
And as far as those long-ago rumors that The Hooters had morphed into some kind of Christian-rock band, Lilley says that’s something of an exaggeration for the band that always welcomed him, gaiety and all.
”We got that for a while. Eric [Bazillian] and Rob [Hyman] have always loved to play with Biblical references here and there in the songs.”
