Six awarded Pride honors
The Capital Pride Planning Committee, the body responsible for Washington’s annual Capital Pride celebration, has selected six people to be honored as this year’s Capital Pride Heroes for “their extraordinary efforts to bring full equality to GLBT communities.”
The honorees of this year’s celebration, which begins June 6 and culminates the following weekend with a parade June 14 and a street festival June 15, are, in alphabetical order:
Sean Bugg, co-publisher of Metro Weekly, Washington’s gay and lesbian newsmagazine, now in its 15th year of community reporting; Noi Chudnoff, the former owner of the Go Mama Go! boutique who died suddenly in November, remembered for her contributions to the Victory Fund, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, and others; Freddie Lutz, owner of Freddie’s Beach Bar & Restaurant in Arlington, for maintaining his gay venue in an otherwise straight neighborhood; Maryland State Del. Heather Mizeur (D), a Montgomery County lesbian and a strong advocate of GLBT equality in the Maryland House of Delegates; Bob Summersgill, former president of local Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance, recognized as a leading advocate “for the legal rights of intersexed people”; and SaVanna Wanzer, who founded D.C.’s Trans Pride in 2007.
