Pride Alliance gears up with call for volunteers

As summer winds down, few will be turning their thoughts so soon to next summer. Some, however, have June 2009 squarely in their sights — namely, the Capital Pride Alliance.

Having inherited the Capital Pride festival from its organizer of the past several years, the Whitman-Walker Clinic, at the close of the June 2008 festival, the CPA is readying for the group’s second general meeting to plan the 2009 affair.

”We’re still in the recruiting phase,” says CPA Board President Michael Lutz. The all-volunteer group’s first planning meeting, which attracted about 40 people in late July, was fairly introductory, he says. By contrast, the upcoming meeting, Monday, Sept. 15, will be moving preparations for the June 5-14, 2009, event into higher gear.

”This is going to be a working meeting, a hands-on meeting,” says Lutz. ”If you’re new, you can find out about each committee. If you want to plan parties, the parade or town-hall meetings, you can join a committee. There are opportunities on all our different committees.”

With 13 committees to choose from, Lutz is not exaggerating. From the Logistics, Safety and Security Committee to the Dances and Parties Committee, there really do seem to be jobs for anyone who may have an interest in participating.

The Sept. 15 meeting, in conjunction with Mayor Fenty’s Office of GLBT Affairs, will be held at the Columbia Heights Community Center at 1480 Girard St. NW, from 7 to 9 p.m.
