Eagle Anniversary
Local bar celebrates with charity auction and title tourney
The D.C. Eagle, downtown at 639 New York Ave. NW, may call the nation’s capital home, but not so for the brand-spanking-new Mr. D.C. Eagle 2009, John Harris, who hails from Baltimore.
Harris secured his new title Saturday, Nov. 22, as the Mr. D.C. Eagle contest rounded out the weekend marking the leather/Levi gay bar’s 37th anniversary. The contest was preceded Friday night by another annual tradition, the Eagle Wings Benefit Auction.

”Eagle Wings is a charity auction for small, local charities,” says Peter Lloyd, the effort’s volunteer organizer. ”This year’s auctions featured leather clothes, toys and brunches.”
While the final tally was not available by Metro Weekly deadline, Lloyd says that, as of Nov. 24, the auction raised ”well over” $2,500.
As outgoing Mr. D.C. Eagle and in keeping with tradition, Alex Holmes was on hand to present the auction. Lloyd says that final duty is among any Mr. D.C. Eagle’s greatest honors before his successor is named the following day.
Holmes also served as a judge in the Mr. D.C. Eagle contest, which saw six contestants who were judged in three categories: casual wear, formal wear, and question-and-answer.
The runner-up for the 2009 title was R. Derek Thomas, of Woodbridge, Va.
