Harman opens doors to bulk of Reel Affirmations offerings
Organizers of the 19th annual Reel Affirmations Film Festival, running Oct. 15 to 24, announced this week that the upcoming event’s main venue will be the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Sidney Harman Hall at 610 F St. NW.
“It’s one of the newest — and definitely nicest — performing-arts centers in D.C.,” says Margaret Murray, executive director of One in Ten, the organization that produces the annual festival.
“There’s a lot of crossover potential for both of our audiences, and it also legitimizes LGBT cinema in that we can stand artistically with an organization like the Shakespeare Theatre Company.”
Murray says as last year’s festival concluded, organizers knew they would need to make changes to cut costs. The Shakespeare Theatre Company is not charging One In Ten for use of the space.
“Economically, we knew that this was going to be a difficult year, not only for us, but for other organizations, donors and sponsors. Our biggest cost is venue-related and we could see that that was not going to go down anytime soon.”
Murray says the Harman Hall will serve as venue for about two-thirds of the nearly 60 programs that will be screened at this year’s event, offering programming every day of the festival. Other venues will include the Goethe-Institut, AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center, and Mead Theatre Lab at Flashpoint in Chinatown. For more info, visit www.reelaffirmations.org.
