Vigil set after trans women attacked, one killed
A Wednesday attack on two transgender women has left one dead, according to the Metropolitan Police Department, who have “tentatively classified this case as a potential hate/bias related crime.”
An unknown, at-large assailant attacked the women, apparently with a knife, at approximately 2:30 p.m. Aug. 26 in the area of 209 Q St. NW. The first victim was pronounced dead at 3:02 p.m. at Howard University Hospital. The second victim was in stable condition, suffering from non-life-threatening injuries.

MPD has not released the name of the surviving victim. The deceased, however, was a client of Transgender Health Empowerment, located just a few blocks from the scene of the crime. T.H.E. has released the deceased’s legal name, Joshua Mack, clarifying that she was known as “Nana-boo.”
Transgender Health Empowerment, located just a few blocks from the scene of the crime, has called for a candlelight vigil Friday, Aug. 28, at 6:30 p.m., in front of 209 Q St. NW.
“We are asking that all community members come out to show their support and condemn this recent violence and urge the community to come forward with any leads,” Brian Watson, director of programs at T.H.E., said in the Thursday release announcing the vigil.
MPD is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to a conviction. Anyone with any knowledge of the attack should call MPD at 202-797-9099. Information may be phoned anonymously to DC Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS, or texted to MPD at 50411.
