DCDD strikes up its bands for a holiday concert

Ever seen a clarinet player with raindeer ears? You just might at the D.C. Different Drummers’ holiday concert this Saturday, Dec. 12. ”The tradition is for ensemble members to dress up in some kind of campy outfit for the last tune, so we’ll see what happens,” teases DCDD artistic director Joe Bello.

”Make the Season Bright” will be a showcase for the group’s many ensembles, from a flute trio to a swing band to a clarinet choir to the full symphonic band. Basically, every DCDD ensemble except the marching band.

”It’s a wide variety of music,” says Bello, “a lot of holiday music [and] not just Christmas.” According to Bello, the concert, featuring about 80 musicians, is the group’s ”way of giving back to the community. A lot of D.C. people are transplants and may not get to go home for Christmas, so this is our way of sharing some holiday cheer.”

DCDD’s holiday concert “Make the Season Bright” takes place Saturday, Dec. 12, at 8 p.m. Lutheran Church of the Reformation, 212 East Capitol St. NE. Tickets are $20. Call 202-403-3669 or visit www.dcdd.org.
