The Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance of Washington, D.C., is looking for nominations for the group’s annual Distinguished Service Awards.
Founded in 1971 as the Gay Activists Alliance, the GLAA is America’s oldest continuously active organization committed to LGBT civil rights. The awards, to be presented at the group’s 40th anniversary gala, honor individuals and groups that have given distinguished service to the local LGBT community.
”Each year we find an embarrassment of riches,” says Rick Rosendall, GLAA’s vice president for political affairs. ”This event gives us an opportunity to honor a range of groups and people for a variety of contributions.”
Nominations should include a brief description of nominees’ service to the community, whether political, cultural, charitable or professional. Nominations should be submitted by e-mail to equal@glaa.org by Friday, Jan. 21.
The awards ceremony and anniversary gala will be held April 20.
”Celebrating 40 years is a reminder of how long we have been active. When GLAA started there were only a handful of gay-identified groups,” says Rosendall. ”Looking back reminds us of how far we have come.”
