Youth and adult PFLAG meetings come to county
Furthering Arlington’s identity as arguably Virginia’s most progressive county, this Sunday will see the meeting of its first youth PFLAG meeting, hosted by the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington. An ancillary meeting for adults began last month.
Affiliated with the D.C. chapter of Parents, Friends and Family of Lesbians and Gays (Metro DC PFLAG), the May 8 meeting will run from 3 to 4:30 in a church meeting space.
”We’re kind of following the model they have set up in Fairfax,” says Elizabeth Fogarty, a founder of the group, whose daughter came out three years ago. That means the youth meeting and adult meetings will happen simultaneously, though separately.
Fogarty says that while the initial adult monthly meeting in April attracted about 10 people, she’s not certain how many might show up for the first youth meeting.
”It’s Mother’s Day, so that could add a little complication,” she says, adding that the June meeting will conflict with the Capital Pride Festival. ”We may be off to a slow start, but it’s just important we start.”
