An American in London: Whistler and the Thames is an international loan exhibition co-organized by the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery and focused on the 19th century artist James McNeill Whistler (you remember, the one with the mother). The American legend got his start in Victorian England, charting the changes wrought by industrialization, from altered vistas to new landmarks to greater urbanization. More than 80 works are on display in a show that Time Out London drooled, “Every single painting is worth the trip.” Through Aug. 17. Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, 1050 Independence Ave. SW.
