GLOV To Present Awards
Center's anti-violence task force offers social and ceremony
Gays and Lesbians Opposing Violence (GLOV), the District’s primary LGBT anti-violence task force, will host a community social and fundraiser at the Duplex Diner at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 6 while honoring several individuals for their work to combat anti-LGBT bias and hate crimes.
The social is open to the public and will provide community members a chance to informally meet with representatives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit (GLLU) and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. Proceeds from drink sales will benefit GLOV, according to A.J. Singletary, the group’s chair.
GLOV, a task force of The Center, D.C.’s LGBT community center, will honor eight individuals at the event with the organization’s 2011 Guardian Awards in recognition of their contributions to make the District safer for LGBT people.
The honorees are: MPD Assistant Chief Diane Groomes, for excellence in working with the community, leadership in times of crisis and dedication to the public safety of LGBT Washingtonians; Wendy Pohlhaus, of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, for continued dedication to working with the community through her leadership of the D.C. Bias Crimes Task Force; Roger Kemp, of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, for continued pursuit of justice in bias crime cases; Hassan Naveed, for outstanding contributions to GLOV through his role as vice chair and head of the Outreach Committee; Kelly Pickard, of GLOV, for dedication to improving the LGBT training at MPD; Matt Corso, of GLOV, for commitment to advocating for hate-crime victim support; Holly Goldmann, of GLOV, for excellence in outreach to the LGBT community; and community activist Earline Budd, for excellent service to Washington’s transgender community.
