DCPS is being recognized for a new policy guidance for DCPS staff that spells out how best to deal with issues involving transgender and gender nonconforming people. Although nondiscrimination policies have been in place for over a decade, DCPS finalized the new policy guidance this spring, spelling out everything from dress code issues to language to use of locker rooms and restrooms in a way that allows gender nonconforming youth to feel comfortable, safe and respected. Diana Bruce, the director of the Office of Youth Engagement, Health and Wellness, will accept the award on behalf of DCPS.

Wanzer

Wanzer, a volunteer with Whitman-Walker Health for 20 years, will be honored with the inaugural Robert Fenner Urquhart Award, for her efforts in helping transport patients to the clinic when they were sick. Wanzer also founded TransPride and served for nine years as a board member for Whitman-Walker. She continues to volunteer with the health center’s Legal Services Program at their Name and Gender Change Clinic, which helps transgender people obtain new identity documents reflecting their correct name and gender.

Whitman-Walker Health’s “Going the Extra Mile” benefit is Wednesday, June 10, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Long View Gallery, 1234 9th St. NW. For more information, visit whitman-walker.org.
