Caitlyn Jenner’s reality series I Am Cait premiers this Sunday and Jenner will openly discuss the suicidal thoughts she had before she came out.
“I’ve been in some dark places,” Jenner says in the episode. “I have been in my house with a gun and said, ‘Let’s just end it right there, no more pain, no more suffering, that struggle, it’s real and I’ve been there.”
Jenner’s words come at a time when suicide in the LGBT community — particularly in the trans community — continues to be a major problem. It was something Jenner addressed directly in her ESPY award speech last week, stating that trans kids are “getting bullied, they’re getting beaten up, they’re getting murdered, they’re committing suicide.”
“If you want to call me names, make jokes and doubt my intentions, go ahead because the reality is I can take it,” she added. “But for thousands of kids out there coming to terms with the reality of who they are they shouldn’t have to take it.”
During the first episode of Jenner’s series, which airs Sunday night on E!, viewers will watch her reunite with her mother, her sisters and meet her daughter Kylie for the first time as Caitlyn. She also shares an emotional scene with her 88-year-old mother, Esther, who tells Jenner that it’s “going to be so difficult for me to think of you as she, and say Caitlyn when I want to speak with you, or call your attention, ‘Hey Caitlyn’ instead of, ‘Hey Bruce.'”
“I love Bruce, it will never change,” Esther added. “It’s going to take some getting used to, I want to do what he wants…. I love him so much, I always have, I always will.”
