Gary Niles Montgomery, the Washington man accused of killing Deoni Jones, a transgender woman, at a Northeast bus stop in February will go to trial in June 2013.
Montgomery, 55, appeared in D.C. Superior Court Friday morning for a status hearing and was scheduled for a trial date, June 10. Montgomery was indicted Nov. 9 on a charge of first-degree murder while armed and pleaded not guilty to the fatal stabbing of Jones. He remains held without bond as he awaits trial.
According to charging documents, two witnesses passing by a bus stop at the intersection of Sycamore Road and East Capitol Street NE, in the city’s Benning Heights neighborhood, at 8 p.m. on Feb. 2 saw a man matching Montgomery’s description strike Jones in the head and then Jones fall to the ground.
Jones was transported to Prince George’s County Hospital Center in Cheverly, Md., where she died of her injuries about six hours later.
Following Jones’s death, the Metropolitan Police Department reviewed video surveillance of the bus stop and released a portion of it for public viewing in order to identify the suspect in the video. Three other witnesses positively identified Montgomery as the man from the surveillance video, leading to his arrest.
